Ball-tampering a ‘cry for help’ in unbalanced sport – Steyn

MUMBAI: South African paceman Dale Steyn believes this year’s Australian ball-tampering scandal could be viewed as a “cry for help” because the balance between bat and ball in cricket has become so skewed in favor of the batsmen. Steyn, one of the most prolific wicket-takers of his generation, did not condone the actions of the Cape Town trio but said the incident exposed the need for cricket to change to prevent the loss of the art of reverse swing bowling. “It’s obviously not on, but if you think about it, it’s…

England’s Broad expects pace rotation during India tests

EDGBASTON: England fast bowler Stuart Broad is expecting his side to rotate their pace options for the five-match test series against India, starting on Wednesday, and is ready for a possible omission. The 32-year-old, who returned from an ankle injury during a first-class match earlier this month, is one of several pacemen in contention, including James Anderson and the uncapped Jamie Porter, to face India in five test matches in six weeks. Broad believes that a number of factors, including the hectic schedule and…

MELBOURNE: Peter Handscomb has been working closely with Chris Rogers, the NCC batting coach, to rediscover his form after admitting bowlers had “worked him out”. Handscomb was out of the playing XI midway through the Ashes last year, and though he returned to the side in Johannesburg, after Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith and David Warner were sent home from their tour of South Africa, he scored 0 and 24 in his two outings. Handscomb’s unorthodox technique has come under scrutiny, and while he has previously stood…

South Africa hope for better outings in shorter format against Sri Lanka

DAMBULLA: The Test series was conceded without much of a fight, but South Africa head into the five-match one-day internationals – the opener will be played on Sunday, 29 July – hoping the change in formats will change their fortunes. In particular, they will want a better show against spin. In the 2-0 reversal in the Tests, South Africa were completely flummoxed by all of Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, Lakshan Sandkan and Akil Dananjaya over the course of the two matches. However, the ODI side has plenty of fresh…

Dale Steyn in ODIs – Greatest Hits

Dale Steyn is tied with Shaun Pollock as the highest wicket-taker for South Africa in Tests, and hasn’t done too badly in one-day internationals either. 35-years-old, Steyn represented Proteas in 116 ODI's taking 180 wickets with remarkable figures of 6-39 against Pakistan. “I will be trying to get to that (2019 ICC Cricket) World Cup. But after the World cup i don't see myself playing white-ball cricket for South Africa. By the time the next World Cup comes, I will be 40,” said Dale Steyn. It’s a good time then to…
