From ‘never aggressive’ asylum seeker to Hamburg knife attacker

HAMBURG: Muddy bootprints along the corridors marked the tell-tale signs of a massive police raid at an asylum seeker shelter in Hamburg, where the suspect who killed one and wounded six in a knife attack lived. Shell shocked women and children peeked out of rooms lining the first floor of block 4D, as neighbours of the 26-year-old suspect recounted his sudden transformation from a helpful man to a mentally disturbed person. "He was always helping other asylum seekers with their paperwork," his neighbour, who gave his…

One dead, four wounded in Hamburg supermarket knife attack

HAMBURG: A man wielding a large kitchen knife stormed into a supermarket in the German city of Hamburg on Friday, killing one person and wounding four others before being detained by police. "There is no valid information yet on the motive" of the man, who "entered a supermarket and suddenly began attacking customers," said police. German daily Bild published a picture of the attacker in the back of a police car with a white, blood-soaked bag over his head, and reported that he cried "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) in…

Negotiators from the world's 20 top economies were expected to have worked all night trying to hammer out a final summit statement that at least gives the impression of unity. Hamburg authorities meanwhile braced for another day of demonstrations, after two days of running battles between police and anti-capitalist protestors left 200 officers…

Dozens injured as protests turn violent ahead of Trump’s maiden G20

HAMBURG: Demonstrations turned violent late Thursday ahead of a tricky first G20 summit for US President Donald Trump, as German police clashed with a hard core of masked anti-capitalist activists hurling bottles and stones. What should have been a peaceful march by around 12,000 people in Hamburg protesting against globalisation was halted as police used water cannon and tear gas to disperse around 1,000 far-left militants. Seventy-six police officers were injured, a spokesman for Hamburg's police told AFP. "Police…
