Kohli

A spunky, chubby teenager with gelled hair shot to fame after leading India to glory in the Under-19 World Cup at Kuala Lumpur in early 2008. In an Indian team filled with saint-like icons  worthy of their own hagiographies, Virat Kohli, with his most un-Indian, ‘bad-boy’ intensity, would clearly be an outcast.

Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988, in Delhi, India, to Prem Kohli and Saroj Kohli. His father was a criminal lawyer while his mother is a housewife. He has two siblings: an elder brother, Vikash, and an elder sister, Bhavna.

Virat Kohli has the best ever Test, ODI and Twenty20 International rating of any Indian batsman. Kohli is a chase master and has the highest number of centuries in run-chases in the world. He is also the fastest batsman to 10,000 and 11,000 runs in ODI cricket having achieved the milestones in 205 and 222 innings respectively.

‘Disrespectful, silly’ Kohli blasted at home and abroad

NEW DELHI: Indian captain Virat Kohli faced stiff criticism both Down Under and at home on Wednesday after his side's crushing loss to Australia in the second Test. Former Australian paceman Mitchell Johnson called Kohli "disrespectful" and "silly" over his heated exchanges with fellow skipper Tim Paine during the Perth Test. Former India great Sunil Gavaskar meanwhile hit out at "selection blunders" and the Indian Express daily slammed Kohli's "explicit lack of confidence" in some of his players. Kohli and…

England series a test of character for India, says Rahane

India’s batsmen face a test of character when they take on hosts England in their five-match test series starting at Edgbaston on Wednesday, Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane says. India were beaten 3-1 in the test series on their last tour of England four years ago as the team led by MS Dhoni struggled for consistency in all departments. However, Rahane believes the current squad have what it takes to reverse that result. “In terms of skill both teams are on par. It will be a test of our mind and character here,”…

India awaits Kohli magic in England Tests

Virat Kohli has plundered Test runs in virtually every corner of the cricket world but England is a scoring desert for India’s superstar captain ahead of a tricky five-match series. He returned from his first England series in 2014 with just 134 runs from five Tests, unable to counter swing bowlers. India, with Mahendra Singh Dhoni as captain, lost the series 3-1. The 29-year-old Kohli is now back in England as reigning International Cricket Council player of the year and the world’s leading batsman with an average of…

Buttler looks to follow Kohli example against India

Jos Buttler aims to put the lessons he learnt from watching Virat Kohli while playing in the Indian Premier League to good use during England's upcoming Test series with India. England face Kohli's men in the first Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday, with Buttler keen to build on the encouraging return to the five-day format he made during a recent 1-1 drawn home campaign with Pakistan. The 27-year-old was recalled to the Test line-up purely on the strength of some impressive batting displays in this season's Twenty20 IPL,…

Root and Morgan clinch decider for England in India ODI series

India perfectly placed for success in England, says Kohli

Ideal scheduling and a month growing accustomed to English conditions mean India will have a strong chance against the hosts in the test series, captain Virat Kohli said on Friday. The Indian side will begin their tour by playing two Twenty20 matches against Ireland, starting June 27. The visitors, currently the top-ranked test team, will then face England in three T20s and three ODIs before playing a five-test series. “We are looking forward to playing difficult cricket. That is the only way we can improve as a…
