Lord’s to host England’s Test clash with Ireland

LONDON: England’s historic first Test match against Ireland will be played at Lord’s next July. Ireland made their Test debut against Pakistan at Malahide in May and in 2019 they will head to London for a four-day match against England at the home of cricket from July 24-27. It will be the first ever meeting between the two local rivals in the game’s longest format. The clash is the precursor to next year’s Ashes series between England and Australia, which begins at Edgbaston on August 1. Lord’s hosts the second Ashes…

‘No more bad days’: Amir aims for ‘best memory’ with series win against England

LONDON: Pakistan pace prodigy Mohammad Amir has had some of the greatest and undoubtedly the worst days of his career in England -- sometimes during the very same match. But fresh from helping bowl Pakistan to a crushing nine-wicket win over England in the first Test at Lord's, the left-arm paceman hopes he can enjoy the "best memory" with a series win in the second and final Test at Headingley, starting Friday. Amir, who burst on the world scene as a teenager, got his name on the Lord's honours board with a six-wicket…

Lord’s Test: Pakistan team fined for slow over-rate

LONDON: Pakistan have been fined for a slow over-rate in their first Test win over England at Lord's. Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed has been fined 60 per cent of his match fee, with the rest of the players fined 30 per cent. If Pakistan commit another offence inside 12 months with Sarfraz as captain, he will be suspended. In announcing the sanctions, the International Cricket Council said Sarfraz had pleaded guilty and as such avoided a formal hearing. Pakistan won by nine wickets on Sunday to take the lead in…

Mohammad Abbas leads Pakistan boys to victory at Lord’s

LONDON: Pakistan team lived up to its reputation of surprising the world as they upset a more experienced England by nine wickets to clinch the Lord's Test and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series on a sunny Sunday.  If someone had predicted that Pakistan's young and inexperienced Test team will make a short shrift of England inside three days he would have been mocked off but here this young Pakistan team had shown the world that if they play to their potential nothing is beyond them. Pakistan did lose Azhar Ali in…

Kevin Pietersen not surprised by Pakistan’s performance at Lord’s

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen, who has played under Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), is not surprised at all by the guest team’s performance at Lord’s. Lauding the Quetta Gladiators captain, he said, “I played under Safraz for 3 seasons of PSL & he certainly has a winning instinct!” Not surprised at all by Pakistan’s performance at Lords. I played under Safraz for 3 seasons of PSL & he certainly has a winning instinct! Mickey also very smart! — Kevin Pietersen…

Pakistan 363 all out, lead England by 179 runs in 1st Test

LONDON: Pakistan were dismissed for 363 in reply to England's first innings 184, a lead of 179 runs, on the third day of the first Test at Lord's on Saturday. They resumed on their overnight 350 for eight knowing that the loss of their next wicket would signal the end of their innings after Babar Azam, who top-scored with 68, retired hurt on Friday. Team management had announced after Friday's close that Babar had suffered a fractured forearm after being struck just above the wrist by a delivery from England…

Bairstow insists England have ‘real fighting chance’ to win Pakistan Test

LONDON: Jonny Bairstow was adamant England still had a real "fighting chance" to win the first Test despite Pakistan ending the second day at Lord's on Friday in a commanding position. Pakistan scored exactly 300 runs in the day's play to finish on 350 for eight at stumps. That left them already 166 runs ahead of England's meagre first-innings 184. Having fallen behind in the game with a sub-standard batting display after England captain Joe Root won the toss on Thursday, the hosts gave Pakistan further…

Lord’s Test: Pakistan pounce as England’s top-order exposed again

LONDON: Pakistan pacemen Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali took four wickets apiece as England suffered yet another top-order collapse at Lord's on Thursday. Hopes that a return home and a rejigged top-order picked by new national selector Ed Smith would help rid England of the batting slumps that plagued them during a run of seven straight Tests without a victory in Australia and New Zealand quickly proved illusory as they were dismissed for just 184. Abbas, in his first match at 'the home of cricket', finished with…

Lord’s Test: England win toss, elect to bat against Pakistan

LONDON: England have won the toss in first Test against Pakistan at Lord’s and elected to bat first. England skipper Joe Root, after winning the toss, said: “It looks on the surface like slightly bowling conditions, but it looks slightly dry underneath and looks to be beginning to crack.” "A great moment for Dom to get his cap this morning, and Jos is approaching it as a debut as well." "We've gone with Wood ... with the surface so dry, hopefully he can exploit the conditions later." Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed…
