Maryse Conde wins alternative literature prize in absence of Nobel

STOCKHOLM: Maryse Conde from the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe was awarded the New Academy Prize in Literature, created after the Swedish Academy postponed this year’s literary Nobel as it sought to deal with the aftermath of a rape scandal. The New Academy was founded by more than 100 Swedish cultural figures earlier this year as a response to the scandal and the postponement of the Nobel. “In her work she describes the ravages of colonialism, and the post-colonial chaos in a language which is both precise…

Hiroshima survivor to accept Nobel Peace Prize for nuclear watchdog

OTTAWA: Setsuko Thurlow was 13 years old and standing only a mile away from ground zero when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima in 1945. More than 62 years after that horrific day, she will jointly accept the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of this year's laureate, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), an organization in which she has played a major role. "I remember a bluish-white flash. My body was flung into the air, and I remember a sensation of floating,"…

Suu Kyi is facing international criticism, including from fellow peace prize winner Desmond Tutu, for not doing more to stop what the U.N. says are mass killings, rapes and the burning of villages taking place in Rakhine state. The violence has forced 421,000 Rohingya…

The media-shy Dylan declined to attend the Nobel ceremony on Saturday. But he is scheduled to perform in Stockholm on April 1 and 2 and in Lund in southern Sweden on April 9, his website said. In order to receive the prize, Dylan needs to give a lecture within six months from Dec. 10. It does not necessarily need not be delivered in Stockholm.…
