Son of Jamal Khashoggi leaves Saudi Arabia

RIYADH: The eldest son of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Salah, and his family have left Saudi Arabia after the government lifted a travel ban, Human Rights Watch said Thursday. "Salah and his family are on a plane to (Washington) DC now," Sarah Leah Whitson, HRW´s executive director for the Middle East and North Africa, told AFP, citing a family friend. There was no immediate comment from Saudi officials, but Whitson said that they were apparently allowed to leave after a travel ban on Salah was lifted.…

Saudi Arabia stuns Egypt 2-1 in World Cup farewell despite Salah strike

VOLGOGRAD: Saudi Arabia managed their first win at the 2018 World Cup by beating Egypt 2-1 with a last-gasp winner that eclipsed Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah’s 22nd minute goal in Monday’s Group A game between the two eliminated teams. Saudi Arabia finished third in the group standings, scoring their only goals of the tournament and vastly improving from the 5-0 thrashing by hosts Russia in their opening game. It was a bitter disappointment for the Egyptian side, however, with Liverpool striker Salah unable to…

Salah set to start against Saudi Arabia as Egypt target World Cup win

Mohamed Salah looks likely to start against Saudi Arabia in Volgograd on Monday as Egypt go in search of a first-ever World Cup win in a battle to avoid finishing bottom of Group A. But Egypt's 45-year-old goalkeeper Essam El Hadary may have to wait for an appearance off the bench to set a record as the oldest player ever to appear at a World Cup. Egypt coach Hector Cuper said he would not tinker greatly with the starting XI that were dumped out of the tournament 3-1 by hosts Russia on Tuesday. "The manager needs a…

Salah gets honorary citizenship of Chechnya as ‘consolation prize’ after World Cup loss

CAIRO: After his team crashed out of the World Cup, Egypt's star player Mohamed Salah has won a consolation prize in the form of honorary citizenship of Chechnya. Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov wrote on Telegram that he had presented the Liverpool star with the honorary title while hosting a dinner for the Egypt team, whose World Cup training base is in the Chechen capital Grozny. "Mohamed Salah is an honorary citizen of Chechnya! That's right!" Kadyrov wrote late Friday. "Tonight I signed a decree to grant the…

Salah’s World Cup bid ends with a whimper

SAINT PETERSBURG: Mohamed Salah's World Cup campaign arguably ended when Egypt's talisman tumbled to the turf in the Champions League final in Kiev on May 26. Uruguay administered the last rites on Wednesday but Egyptians already knew the writing was on the wall. Salah returned to action for the first time in three weeks for his side's do-or-die clash with hosts Russia in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday but was a pale imitation of the player who dazzled for Liverpool last season, scoring 44 goals. He did get on the…

Salah disappoints as Egypt crushed by Russia

Three weeks and three days after Sergio Ramos twisted and slammed Egypt's best World Cup hope into the grass, Mohamed Salah returned. He won a penalty, and scored it, ripping the ball with his left foot into the top corner. But by then, Russia were already three up and this game was as good as gone. On show here was not the Salah that had tormented Roma and Manchester City, or scored 32 goals in the Premier League and 10 to power Liverpool to the Champions League final. This was Salah making the best of things,…

Salah declared fit to play Egypt World Cup opener

YEKATERINBURG, Russia: Mohamed Salah has recovered from his shoulder injury and barring a last-minute hitch the Egyptian star will play in their World Cup opener against Uruguay on Friday, coach Hector Cuper said. The striker's return after weeks of uncertainty is a massive boost for Egypt and for the tournament in Russia because it means one of the hottest players on the planet at the moment will be in action. "We still have to see how training goes today, but I can almost assure you 100 per cent that he'll play, we…

Deep in Egypt's Nile Delta region, the children of Nagrig village have a clear goal in life: they want to become football stars like Mohammed Salah, England's top scorer and Africa's top player. Salah, who hails from their village, has been a Premier League sensation since joining Liverpool -- setting a new Premier League score in a 38-game campaign with 32 goals. The Premier League's top scorer this season, Salah, 25, grabbed the Golden Boot, and has won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year…

Salah steers Liverpool into Champions League at Chelsea’s expense

Liverpool warmed-up for the Champions League final in style by ensuring they are back in the competition next season as Mohamed Salah set a new Premier League record of 32 goals in a 4-0 thrashing of Brighton on Sunday. Victory for Liverpool meant it didn't matter what fifth-placed Chelsea did at Newcastle, but they failed to put any sort of pressure on the Champions League finalists by succumbing limply to a 3-0 defeat at St. James's Park. Gabriel Jesus's stoppage time winner for Manchester City in a 1-0 victory at…

Salah promises Liverpool fans: this is ‘just the start’

LONDON: Mohamed Salah has reassured Liverpool fans his stunning first season is "just the beginning" of his time at the club despite speculation over interest from Real Madrid. The Egyptian collected awards in Liverpool on Thursday after being voted player of the season by both the club's fans and his teammates before boarding a flight to collect the Football Writers' Association's award in London. The 25-year-old has scored 43 goals in all competitions since arriving from Roma last summer, a return that has seen him…
