Toddlers may sleep better in cribs until age 3

PENNSYLVANIA: Parents who wait to start the crib-to-bed transition until toddlers are 3 years old may find that both they and their children get better sleep, researchers say. In a survey of parents and caregivers across five countries, those who delayed the transition from crib to bed longer were more likely to report less resistance at bedtime, fewer night awakenings and longer sleep duration for children, the study authors report in the journal sleep medicine. “Research during the last decade has shown how important…

Workplace noise in daytime linked to sleep problems at night

TAIPEI: Being exposed to a noisy workplace all day may cause stress that carries over into the evening and reduces sleep quality, suggests a small study from Taiwan. Researchers found that when workers had higher occupational noise exposure, they had higher blood pressure and higher levels of the stress-hormone cortisol after work, and got less restful sleep that night, compared to days with lower daytime noise exposure. “We take the amount of noise in our environments for granted,” said Dr. Seema Sharma of the…

Just one hour of social media a day can ruin your sleep: study

Social media is presumably the future of the digital world, but it can also jeopardize your future – in terms of health. A new study has warned that one hour a day on social media can derail your sleeping pattern. The report by Canadian researchers was commissioned to assess why so many young people struggle to sleep eight hours. They found the root problem to be social media: those who spent at least 60 minutes on WhatsApp, Facebook or Snapchat suffered more sleep issues than those who did not. The more time they…

Changing childcare settings can affect sleep

NEW YORK:  Inconsistent childcare arrangements can affect toddlers’ sleep at night, a new study suggests. Consistent childcare arrangements - even complicated ones - didn’t seem to affect young children’s nighttime sleep. But when the pattern changed over time, toddlers didn’t sleep as well, study leader Jen-Hao Chen told Reuters Health in an email. “The first three to five years of life are critical for children’s development of a single, consolidated sleep,” said Chen, a researcher at Howard University in Washington,…

Sleep may even help memory in very young babies

NEW YORK: Three-month-old infants have better recall when they get a brief nap after learning something new, according to small experiment that suggests sleep may play a role in solidifying memories very early in life. While previous research has linked frequent naps to better memory in babies as young as 6 months, the current study examined the impact of a single 1.5- to 2-hour nap for infants half that age. The experiment tested memory by counting on babies to quickly tire of looking at faces they remember.…

Toddlers playing with touchscreens sleep less: study

PARIS: The more toddlers play with touchscreen devices the less they sleep, according to a study released Thursday that suggests the findings could be cause for concern. For every additional hour using a touchscreen phone or tablet during the day, children aged six months to three years slept nearly 16 minutes less in each 24 hour period, researchers reported in the journal Scientific Reports. But the study could not determine if the extra screen time was responsible for tiny tots sleeping less, or if the loss of shuteye…

What is the meaning of these common recurring dreams?

We all have to sleep whether we want to or not as staying up past our bedtime means that chances are that we will pay for it later by feeling tired the next day. When we sleep we usually dream and although dreams can differ wildly from one individual to another, there are certain dreams that share a common theme. These “common” dreams have been experienced by millions of people and through the years the experts have weighed in on what they believe these dreams mean. FALLING This is probably one of the scariest dreams…

Babies should sleep in parents’ room first year: US doctors

MIAMI: To reduce the risk of sudden death, babies should sleep in the same room as their parents but in their own crib or bassinet for the first year of life, US doctors said Monday. The new policy statement by the American Academy of Pediatrics still says babies should sleep on their backs, on a clean surface free of toys and blankets, a guideline that has been in place since the 1990s and has reduced sudden infant deaths by about 50 per cent. Still, some 3,500 infants die each year in the United States from…
