‘I don’t have any hope’: How toxic water is allegedly slowly poisoning two villages in Punjab

Basharat Ali was 15 when his legs began to falter, a condition doctors have blamed on polluted water in a region infamous for the deformities that afflict many of its people. Too weak to carry his own schoolbag, he was taken to hospital, where doctors said water laden with toxic levels of arsenic, fluoride, minerals and various metals was to blame. “It was a big blow to me as I had to quit my studies to get treatment,” Ali told AFP on the rooftop of his house some 45 kilometres from Lahore. More than 600,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since late August carrying accounts of…

Around 30,000 Rakhine Buddhists and Hindus have also been displaced, as ethnic and religious hatreds carve through the western state. Access to the epicentre of unrest -- the northern wedge of Rakhine -- has been blocked by the government as the crisis unfolds. But the weary and wounded Rohingya arriving in Bangladesh…

Fires destroy more villages in Myanmar’s Rohingya region: sources

YANGON: Several more villages were burnt down on Saturday in a part of northwest Myanmar where many Rohingya Muslims had been sheltering from violence sweeping the area, two sources monitoring the situation said. The fires, which started on Friday when up to eight villages went up in flames in the ethnically mixed Rathedaung region, have increased concerns that more minority Rohingya will flee to neighbouring Bangladesh. Blazes started on Saturday engulfed as many as four more settlements in Rathedaung, likely…
