Terror bid foiled: FC unearths 21 landmines during operation

RAWALPINDI: Foiling a major terrorism bid in Balochistan, Frontier Corps on Monday recovered 21 landmines in Zhob area, ARY News reported.

Media wing of Pakistan armed forces, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the explosive mines were recovered during an operation in Qamar Din area of Zhob.

The ISPR said the mines weighed 235 kilogram and they were to be used in attacks on Muharram processions.

Earlier, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa said terrorism was a global menace and required collective response.

“Pakistan has remained subjected to this threat for quite some time especially during the last two decades,” he said.

In a statement on Pakistan’s Defense and Martyrs Day, Pentagon official acknowledged the sacrifices and struggle of South Asia’s gains in war on terror.

“We hold the sacrifices of Pakistan in high regard in war against terrorism,” said Randall G. Schriver, the assistant defence secretary for the Department of Defence’s (DoD) Asian and Pacific Security Affairs.

The United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution last year, established 21 August as the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism in order to honor and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms

The resolution builds on existing efforts by the General Assembly, the Commission of Human Rights and the Human Rights Council to promote and protect the rights of victims of terrorism.

By proclaiming an International Day dedicated to victims, the General Assembly reaffirmed that the promotion and the protection of human rights and the rule of law at the national; and international levels are essential for preventing and combating terrorism.
