A tribute to Jagjit Singh

Think about ghazals and the first name that would come into your mind would probably be Jagjit Singh. Jagjit Singh is a famous Indian ghazal writer, composer and singer.

It was Jagjit Singh’s father who noticed his son’s hidden talent and decided to encourage it. Jagjit Singh learnt music from Pandit Chaganlal Sharma and Ustad Jamaal Khan who trained him up to excel in classical music.

He used to play at Gurudwaras and hone his skills. Also, he played for stage shows and on radio. After moving to Mumbai, Jagjit Singh got married to Chitra Dutta. She, too, was a playback singer. He went on to sing for advertisements and then went on to sing for films even as he made a struggle to find a place among ghazal singers.

Jagjit Singh had given his voice for playback singing in films like Avishkaar, Prem Geet, Arth, Saath Saath, Sitam, Kalka, Tum Laut Aao, Phir Aayee Barsat, Aashiana, Nargis, Khalnayak, Dushman, Bhopal Express, Sarfarosh, Tum Bin, Dhoop, Veer-Zaara etc.

Jagjit Singh released a couple of singles and albums. He died in the year 2011 after a successful journey in Bollywood.
