‘Condolence meet’: Turkish consul-general calls on Nawaz at Jati Umra

LAHORE: Turkish consul-general on Friday called on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at his residence in Jati Umrah to express condolences on the demise of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

The Turkish diplomat also laid flowers at the grave of Kulsoom Nawaz who was laid to rest earlier today. He said the Turkish people are with the Sharif family in their time of grief and sorrow.

Yesterday, the ambassador of Saudi Arabia and the Iranian consul-general also visited Nawaz Sharif and expressed their deepest condolences.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was laid to rest at the ancestral graveyard in Jati Umrah, Raiwind near the graves of her father-in-law, Muhammad Sharif and brother-in-law Abbas Sharif.

Renowned scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel led the funeral prayers at Sharif Medical City adjacent to the Sharif family’s residence.

The former first lady passed away on September 11 in London after a prolonged illness.

Nawaz Sharif, son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar, and Shehbaz Sharif along with a huge number of PML-N leaders and supporters attended the funeral amid strict security

Delegations from other political parties including the PPP, the MQM-P and PSP reached Lahore to attend the funeral.

A government delegation comprising Chief Minister Punjab Usman Buzdar, Governor Punjab Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar and National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaisar also made it to Sharif family’s Jati Umra residence to attend the funeral and burial ceremony.

The flight carrying Kulsoom Nawaz’s casket landed at Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore in wee hours on Friday. Shehbaz Sharif, Asma Nawaz, and ten other members of the Sharif family accompanied the coffin.

Congregational prayers (Rasm-i-Qul) for Begum Kulsoom will be offered on Sunday between Asr and Maghreb prayers.
