Two extortionists arrested in Karachi

KARACHI: The Special Investigation Team on Monday arrested two extortionists from city’s area of New Karachi, ARY News reported.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Noman Siddiqui, Babar and Tahir, the two extortionists, were nabbed red handed while demanding extortion money from a scrap dealer in New Karachi.

” The case was lodged against both the extortionists in Sher Shah,” the SSP continued.

It is pertinent to mention here that, last night, a shopkeeper was injured in firing after he had reportedly refused to pay extortion money demanded by assailants.

The incident occurred in Kharadar area of the city. The attackers had first opened fire on the shop and ten threw a slip inscribed with Rs 1 million extortion amount.

According to police, an international telephone number was written on the slip given by extortionists to the shopkeeper. The case has been registered at Kharadar Police Station.

Inspector general Sindh police has also taken notice of the incident and sought detailed report from senior superintendent of police.

Rangers, police and intelligence agencies have been conducting operations against criminals for more than couple of years in Karachi, and a drastic drop has been witnessed in crime rate since then. However, intermittent incidents occur that challenge the writ of the law enforcers.

Prime Minister Imran Khan in an important meeting in September had said coordination among Rangers, police and other law enforcement agencies at every level was essential to curb street crimes in Karachi.

The meeting was attended by Governor Sindh Imran Ismail, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Corp Commander Lt. Gen. Hamayun Aziz, Chief Secretary Sindh Azam Sulaiman Khan, Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Sualeh Farooqi, Director General Rangers Maj Gen Muhammad Saeed, IG Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem Imam, Secretary Home Abdul Qadir Qazi and senior officers.

The PM said law and order was high priority agenda of his government as without peace and stability economic potential of the country could not be harnessed.

The meeting was informed that overall 90 percent reduction occurred in the rate of heinous crimes since start of the Karachi operation.
