Two more bodies pulled out; Karachi beach death toll hits 38

A rescue operation was underway since the tragedy surfaced on second day of Eid when reports of scores of people drowning off the Karachi beach started coming to light.

On Thursday, the rescuers had recovered at least 24 bodies in a rescue operation assisted by the Pakistan Navy divers.

Pakistan Navy came to the assistance of municipal authorities of Karachi with helicopters and divers to trace those missing in the rough sea.

The city authorities had imposed section 144 to ban swimming at the beach. However, there were reports that the notification regarding Section-144 imposition at beaches had already expired on July 17 and the government officials concerned neglected to renew the notification.

The government of Sindh has announced Rs. 2,00,000 (0.2 million) each for the families of the victims of Karachi beach tragedy.
