University employee among three arrested in Mashal’s murder

PESHAWAR: Police on Sunday arrested an employee of Abdul Wali Khan University in connection with the murder of Mashal Khan who was attacked by a vigilante mob after being accused of blasphemy earlier this month.

District Police Officer (DPO) Mardan Mian Saeed said that two suspects were arrested from Mardan and another from Charsadda. Two of them are students while another is an employee of the university.

Police officials said that Bilal Baksh, a security in charge at the university, is the main accused in Mashal Khan’s murder. The number of arrested suspects has increased to 35 after the latest arrests.

A case has been lodged in Sheikh Maltoon police station by the Station House Officer (SHO) against the killing of Mashal Khan under Section 302 and 297 and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorist Act.

Ealier on Saturday, police remanded three suspects in Khan’s murder for four days after they reportedly confessed involvement in Mashal’s murder in front of a judicial magistrate.

Mashal Khan, 23, was a student of journalism and was killed on April 15 inside the premises of the university after being accused of blasphemous comments on social media. The university and its hostel has been closed indefinitely to avoid further escalation.
