US closely monitoring events in Karachi, MQM leaders’ arrests

Answering a question during the daily press briefing, the state department spokesperson said that US is closely monitoring those events and the authorities are aware Pakistani security forces have arrested some MQM members allegedly involved in violent protests and that these operations have included the closure and the demolition of offices deemed to have been illegally constructed.

“We routinely communicate with our Pakistani counterparts about issues like this,” Kirby told the questioner.

When asked if anyone from MQM USA leadership approached the state department with their concerns, Kirby said he is not not aware if there has been specific concerns relayed to the department by any MQM member.

The spokesperson, however, referred the questioner to government of Pakistan for “latest information about these events”.
