US envoy on Afghan peace to arrive in Pakistan tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The United States (US) Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad will arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday in an effort to expedite Afghan peace process.

According to the details, the US diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad, during his visit, will hold important meetings with civil and military leadership and take them into confidence over US dialogues with the Afghan Taliban.

Diplomatic sources said that Zalmay Khalilzad will seek Pakistan’s support to expedite the Afghan peace process.

It is pertinent to mention here that the veteran US diplomat had to arrive in Islamabad last month but the scheduled visit was cancelled for unknown reasons.

Earlier in the day, the US President Donald Trump had written a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, seeking Pakistan’s help in bringing Taliban leadership to the negotiation table.

In a letter, Trump sought assistance from Pakistan in resolving Afghan issue, aimed at ending the 17-year invasion of Afghanistan by the US troops. The PM received the letter from the US president this morning.
