WASHINGTON: United States has expressed concern over the disappearance of social media bloggers and human rights activists in Pakistan, ARY News reported on Friday.

US State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner has said that United States is very concerned by reports that several Pakistani bloggers and activists have been reported missing and monitoring the situation.

The spokesman said that the US is aware that Pakistan’s Interior Ministry is investigating the disappearance of the bloggers.

Clarifying a news report Toner said that US will be setting up tactical security centres in its Embassy in Pakistan and other countries. He added that the centres will round the clock monitor the security situation.

He went on to say that the US administration is making efforts to reduce the number of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay detention centre.

Around five human rights activists and bloggers recently went missing in Pakistan. The government authorities have failed to trace the missing social media activists as yet.

‘Reporters Without Borders’ had declared Pakistan a ‘dangerous’ country for journalists in its annual report in 2015.
