Everyone in Pakistan knew that the country’s mini-screen beauty Saba Qamar is about to make her Bollywood debut and that too alongside the versatile Irrfan Khan.
The makers of the Saket-Chaudhry directed movie released its first trailer today and the 2 minute 42 seconds video shows that the movie is all what you can expect from the Bollywood great Irrfan Khan and an intelligent actress like Saba Qamar to pick.
Hindi Medium shows Irrfan and Saba as a young couple struggling to get the perfect education for their daughter. Irrfan plays a commoner who cannot speak English: “My life is Hindi but my wife is English.”
The trailer showcases the struggles “Hindi medium” people face in India and Urdu medium face in Pakistan, countries where English is a yardstick for a person’s intelligence and coolness.
As Saba Qamar says in the trailer “English is not a language but a class”
All of us in Pakistan and India can relate to the trailer as it depicts the reality of both the societies and their obsession with English. We believe what an English speaking individual says, we like the English labels on our products no matter if we can’t understand them, all because its cool.
