What Eric Dane revealed in his last interview before his death

Netflix has released what it says is Eric Dane’s final recorded interview, a 50-minute special titled Famous Last Words: Eric Dane.

The timing is hard to ignore. The actor’s death was confirmed just yesterday, nearly 10 months after he went public with his ALS diagnosis.

According to Eric Dane’s family, he passed away following a courageous battle with the progressive neurological illness.

“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read. “He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

Dane, widely recognized for playing Dr. Mark Sloan — “McSteamy” to longtime viewers — on Grey’s Anatomy, had agreed to film the conversation last year. The understanding was simple: it would only air after he was gone.

In the interview named Famous Last Words: Eric Dane, he looks back on the ALS diagnosis that changed everything. Eric Dane talks about addiction, about the strain and strength inside his marriage to Rebecca Gayheart, and about the kind of love that doesn’t really fade.

There’s no dramatic performance to it, just pure reflection that at times it feels raw.

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a progressive disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It gradually affects movement, speech and breathing. There is still no cure and Eric Dane doesn’t sugarcoat that reality in the special.

He spends a significant part of the interview speaking about his daughters, Billie and Georgia. Beach trips. Long days in the water. Family time in Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico.

Eric Dance shares four lessons he says the disease taught him — about living fully, loving deeply, choosing people carefully, and meeting hardship with dignity. The message to his daughters is simple and direct: they were his center.

Following the news, several Grey’s Anatomy co-stars shared tributes. Patrick Dempsey pointed followers toward the ALS organization I AM ALS, urging support for research.

The special is now streaming. For many viewers, it won’t feel like just another celebrity interview, but to some, it feels like a farewell to Eric Dane.
