LAHORE: Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf said on Saturday his party always respected courts.

Speaking to media after his appearance before an accountability court, he complained that his name was placed on the Exit Control List (ECL) on mere allegations of illegal appointments in Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO).

Alleging double standards, the former prime minister said, those who looted billions of rupees were not placed on the ECL. Everyone should be meted out the same treatment, he suggested.

He regretted that travel restrictions were imposed on him, citing the cases which he said were ill-founded and fake.

Earlier, the court had indicted Ashraf in a reference related to illegal recruitment in the Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO).

According to the NAB reference, Ashraf had recruited as many as 437 people without taking merit into consideration.

It merits to mention here that Ashraf has also been indicted by another accountability court in Islamabad in a rental power case.

Ashraf is accused of misusing his authority during his tenure as power minister to get approval from the Economic Coordination Committee for an increase in the down-payment to the rental power companies from seven per cent to 14 per cent, amounting to about Rs22 billion.
