After WhatsApp, Facebook messenger hit by temporary outage

NEW YORK/KUALA LUMPUR: Facebook messenger, an instant messaging service application, reportedly suffered a temporary outage in various parts of the world on Saturday.

Users in countries ranging from the United States to Malaysia reported on Twitter that the Facebook messenger was down in their countries. The extent of the outage and the reasons for it were not immediately known.

Following the temporary outage, the users in many parts of world were unable to send or receive messages.

It was the second major incident of its nature within 24 hours as another popular freeware and cross-platform instant messaging service for smartphones, WhatsApp, had also been hit with temporary suspension of 30 minutes.

‘Whatsappdown’ was the top trending item on Twitter in India, which is WhatsApp’s biggest market with about 200 million of its billion-plus users. It was also a top trending item on Twitter in Pakistan, Britain, Germany and many other countries.

A spokeswoman for Facebook in Singapore said the company was still investigating the matter.

WhatsApp has faced similar widespread outages this year, including for several hours in May.
