Facebook vice president meets Nisar, commits to remove provocative material

ISLAMABAD: Vice President of Facebook Joel Kaplan on Friday called on Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and committed to remove fake accounts, explicit, hateful and provocative material that incited violence and terrorism, ARY News reported.

Talking to Nisar in Islamabad, the Facebook vice president reiterated to keep the platform safe and promote values that were in congruence to community standards in Pakistan.

The two sides discussed steps to remove blasphemous content from social media.

Nisar said no one could be allowed to misuse social media hurting religious sentiments and undertaking unlawful activities.

“The government believes in freedom of expression. However, the entire Muslim Ummah has serious concerns over misuse of social media platforms to propagate blasphemous content,” he said.

He has regretted that certain elements on the social media were trying to sow the seed of hatred and the authorities would have to confront them at all costs.

The minister said all the security agencies and the National Counter Terrorism Authority were also working in coordination and trying to develop a mechanism to check the activities of the proscribed outfits and objectionable content on social media.
