KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) chief Dr Farooq Sattar on Friday called upon Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to disqualify its estranged leader and Karachi Deputy Mayor Arshad Vohra from holding the public office.
In a letter to top electoral body, Sattar has accused Vohra of violating the constitution for joining Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) and retaining the public office.
The MQM-P chief asserted that Vohra elected as deputy mayor on MQM-P ticket and he did not relinquish his office after changing loyalty to PSP, which is sheer violation of the constitutional laws.
Sattar demanded the ECP to issue a notification of Vohra’s disqualification immediately.
To corroborate his demand, the party chief has also given a reference of MQM-P senior leadership granting him authority to pursue a legal action against Vohra in a consultative meeting held on Nov 3.
Moreover, he called for a by-election to replace Vohra in the city government.
Earlier on Oct 29, Vohra announced to join the Mustafa Kamal-led PSP in a press conference, besides resigning from his post after completing all the legal formalities.
However, later PSP chairman Mustafa Kamal said the party would not ask Vohra to quit his office in light of the ECP’s judgment in Ayesha Gulalai case.
