TTAP mulls leadership changes, Fazlur Rehman likely to become new head

LAHORE: The opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aayine-e-Pakistan (TTAP) is considering a major leadership reshuffle, and a change in the alliance’s name is also under discussion, sources said on Thursday.

According to sources, TTAP chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai is likely to be removed from his position following his nomination as Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly by PTI founder Imran Khan.

Sources claimed that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) may join TTAP, with Maulana Fazlur Rehman emerging as the likely new head of the opposition alliance.

TTAP has already announced nationwide protests against the recently enacted 27th Amendment. Opposition leaders reportedly want Maulana Fazlur Rehman to lead the protest movement, as both sides strongly oppose the amendment.

Sources further revealed that some PTI leaders have opposed the proposal to make Maulana Fazlur Rehman the head of the alliance, though discussions are ongoing. If negotiations progress smoothly, the alliance may be renamed the Grand Opposition Alliance, sources added.

A senior PTI leader said that talks with Maulana Fazl ur Rehman are 60% finalized and that a PTI delegation is expected to meet him within the next two to three days. Once the discussions conclude, the final approval for the new opposition alliance will be sought from the PTI founder, according to sources.

Earlier, on Friday TTAP announced countrywide protests following its meeting held in the capital, ARY News reported.

TTAP has issued a press release to the media detailing the decisions made in the meeting.

TTAP will actively participate in the lawyers’ protest in Lahore against the approval of the 27th Amendment by both houses of the Parliament.

The opposition alliance has also announced to observe a countrywide “Black Day” next Friday, on November 21.

TTAP has termed the 27th Amendment an attack on the basic structure of the Constitution, and a resolution will be presented in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly against it.
