FIA gets physical remand of NADRA official in ‘Sharbat Gula fake CNIC Case’

PESHAWAR: A court on Friday remanded Assistant Director of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), for his alleged involvement in issuing fake Pakistani identity cards to Afghan woman Sharbat Gula and her family members.
NADRA’s Assistant Director in Peshawar, Amaad, has been sent on a three-day physical remand to FIA after a court hearing today.
Amaad and two other officials of NADRA officials, still at large, were suspended for issuing CNICs to the Afghan family.

Sharbat Gula rose to fame when Steve McCurry, a famous photographer, took the most iconic picture of all times in December 1984 at a refugee camp on the edge of Peshawar.
The image stared from the magazine cover of National Geographic in June 1985 and remained a mystery for the following 17 years.
McCurry later joined a crew from National Geographic Television & Film to find for her and hoped to see her alive again. She was later discovered by National Geographic in 2002.
Pakistan deports Gula to Afghanistan
Afghan’s president on Wednesday welcomed back Sharbat Gula, the green-eyed ‘Afghan Girl’ and offered her a furnished apartment after she was deported from Pakistan.
Pakistan security officials escorted Gula overnight from a Peshawar hospital, where she had been staying since her arrest last month for living illegally in Pakistan, and handed her over to Afghan authorities at the Torkham border.
She was arrested in Pakistan earlier in October after which a trial was launched.
A special anti-corruption court later sent Gula to 15 days imprisonment in prison with a fine. At the end of her sentence, she was deported to Afghanistan.
Ghani promised to provide her with a furnished apartment to ensure she “lives with dignity and security in her homeland”.
