FIFA World Cup: Mexico beat Cameroon in rain-hit encounter

TOP NEWS

NATAL: Mexico edged past Cameroon 1-0 in their rain-hit FIFA World Cup encounter at Estádio das Dunas in Natal on Friday, ARY News reports.

The only goal of the match came in the 61st minute when Mexican striker Oribe Peralta left footed shot found the back of the net.

Mexico was dominating the game right from the start and had majority of the possession throughout the match.

Striker Giovani dos Santos’ goal was rejected by the referee in the 11th minute due to an offside despite that he was in line with the Cameroon defenders. His second goal was also denied due to an offside in the the 29th minute.

However, Cameroon captain Samuel Eto’o wasted the chance to put his side in the front after his shot hit the goal post in the 21st minute.

The side in Green was trying everything they could to take the lead and dos Santos was proving to be a menacing threat to Cameroon’s defence. None of the side managed to score in the first half.

Cameroon goalkeeper Charles Itandje blocked Peralta’s effort to put the Mexican side in the front after a one-on-one effort by the striker.

Poor officiating marred the game as Song was not penalized for fouling dos Santos. The Mexican supporters were also expressing their discontent over the non-penalization and disallowed goals.

Mexico finally took the lead in the 61st minute when Peralta scored via his left foot.

Guillermo Ochoa’s dive denied Cameroon to snatch a point in injury time after a swinging shot by Assou-Ekotto.
