TOP NEWS

SAO PAULO: Two goals by Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior also known as Neymar helped Brazil beat Croatia 3-1 in the opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo, ARY News reports on Friday.

Emotional scenes were witnessed in the national anthems as the host side was reciting it with pure passion.

Brazil and Croatia both attacked each other’s halves throughout the opening minutes of the match but neither side managed to put the ball inside the six yard box.

However, some poor defending by the five time champions put Croatia in the lead as Brazilian defender Marcelo scored an own goal in the 11th minute.

Neymar was a constant threat to the Croatian defence as he displayed some classy dribbling and running.

The attacker managed to equalize the scoreline for the host side in the 29th minute after he took a shot from outside the penalty box and the ball found the bottom right corner of the goal.

Brazilians were dominating the possession and they had many chances to take the lead.

The hosts were awarded a penalty kick after Croatia made a foul in the 69th minute. Neymar scored the penalty, making it 2-1 for his side.

However, Croatia’s equalizer was turned down by the referee due to a questionable foul. Luka Modrić nearly scored the equalizing goal but missed.

The European team was trying everything they could to pull a goal back in the game as they kept attacking the Brazilian half throughout the game but failing to make anything out of it.

Captain Oscar sealed the match for the hosts in the 91st minute as he scored the goal and the match ended 3-1.
