Fruit vendor dies during anti-encroachment operation in Karachi

KARACHI: A fruit vendor lost his life from alleged police torture during an anti-encroachment drive in Karachi’s Empress Market on Thursday, ARY News reported.

According to ARY News correspondent Salman Lodhi, a fruit vendor named Maroof Khan was killed during a protest staged by fruit vendors during the anti-encroachment operation under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner Saddar Sara Javed with police support.

As the vendors started protest and pelted stones upon the Commissioner’s team, police resorted to baton charge in order to disperse the protesters.

During the baton charge, one protester identified as Maroof Khan became unconscious and lost his life. Protesters, who later blocked the road at Empress Market, claimed that Maroof Khan died from police torture.

Police, on the other hand, said that there were no torture marks on the fruit vendor’s body and had likely died a “natural death”.
