Geeta’s request granted: Bajrangi Bhaijaan to be dubbed in sign language

Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan did the wonders for everyone, when it was released. The movie not only received rave reviews from both India and Pakistan, but also won the star a legion of fans in Pakistan as well. The movie became one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time and managed to highlight the issue of stranded individuals in India and Pakistan.

One such was the case of deaf and mute 23 year-old mute Geeta, who had mistakenly crossed into Pakistan and been stranded in the country since 12 years. She was taken care of by renowned Pakistani philanthropist Bilquis Edhi. The film’s success highlighted her plight, which was also similar to Harshali Malhotra’s character from Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Upon Geeta’s request, the film will now be dubbed in sign language, so that special children and people like her could comprehend the movie.

The dubbing will be undertaken by the help centre for persons with special needs being run in Tukoganj police station.

“I have recently interacted with Geeta, who is in Karachi (Pakistan), through video call using sign language. She said that Salman’s “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” should be dubbed into sign language so that she and a large number of people like her would be able to watch and understand the movie, especially its songs and dialogues in a better way,” Head of the help centre and sign language interpreter Gyanendra Purohit said.

“On the request of Geeta, we are going to dub “Bajrangi Bhaijaan” film into a sign language. We wish that once it is completed and exhibited for the first time, both Salman and Geeta should remain present on the occasion,” said Purohit.

If everything goes according to plan, Geeta could be in India by October 26 and reunited with her family, as the Centre had completed almost all formalities.

Films like Sholay, Tare Zameen Per, Munna Bhai MBBS and Gandhi have been dubbed into sign language before.
