Govt officers will not be handcuffed: NAB chairman

LAHORE: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (rtd) Javed Iqbal here on Tuesday said that no government officer, under watchdog’s custody, would be handcuffed.

Addressing senior bureaucrats at Civil Secretariat in Lahore, Justice (rtd) Javed Iqbal said that the government officers should fulfill their responsibilities without any fear and should consider appointments and transfers on the basis of merit and transparency.

He said that civil bureaucracy was the backbone of the country and urged them to serve the country with sincerity. The watchdog chief said that officers of grade-19 and above would not be arrested without his approval.

He further said that NAB took suspects into custody after having concrete evidences against those arrested. Javed Iqbal said that the anti-graft watchdog was committed to eliminate corruption from the country.

Earlier, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal, on January 30, had declared bureaucracy backbone of the country.

Addressing federal secretaries in Islamabad, Javed Iqbal had said that bureaucracy was playing an active and significant role in the progress and development of the country.

He had said that eradication of corruption was a collective social responsibility and added that everyone should play its role to rid the country of corruption.
