KARACHI: Sindh police chief A.D. Khawaja has declined to disclose whereabouts of under-fire cop Rao Anwar who was suspended after his involvement emerged in a ‘fake encounter’ of youngster Naqeebullah Mehsud.

“We cannot share the whereabouts of Rao, he is in physical remand and is being provided security as per the order of Supreme Court,“ said IG Sindh A.D Khawaja.

“The matter is in court,” he said “I won’t further comment on it”.

After Rao’s unexpected appearance before the apex court, he was arrested on the directives of Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and brought to Karachi for trial.

An anti-terrorism court granted 30-days physical remand of the former superintendent of police Rao Anwar, the main suspect behind the death of 27-year-old Naqeebullah Mehsud, for questioning.

Anwar, who was at large for nearly two months after a probe team found that Naqeeb was killed in a fake shootout led by him finally presented himself in front of the court and was arrested.

The Chief Justice, meanwhile, issued directives for unfreezing his bank accounts and dropped contempt of court charges initiated against Anwar for disobeying the court orders.
