Illegal organ transplants: Police says gangs operating in several Punjab villages

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar has ordered the investigation agencies to join hands against the menace of illegal organ transplants, ARY News reported on Tuesday.

Justice Saqib Nisar during suo moto hearing of the case by the Supreme Court called joint efforts to curb the menace of illegal organ trade.

Police submitted its report about illegal organ transplants in the court. The report, comprises of 53 pages, disclosed that several gangs dealing in illegal kidney trade operating in villages of Punjab. The donors claim to be relatives of the beneficiary during kidney transplants, the report further said.

SSP Sajid Kiani told the court that the police was not authorized to act against the entities involved in illegal organ transplants and the ordinance dealing with the crime not applicable in Islamabad. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been authorized to deal against this crime.

The Chief Justice while lauding the police effort issued notices to Attorney General, the advocate generals of provinces and Gilgit and Baltistan region and Azad Kashmir.
