ISLAMABAD: Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan on Tuesday said the ruling party legislators should hang their heads in shame after opposing the amendment in Election Bill 2017 aimed at barring disqualified members from heading political parties, ARY News reported.

“In a democracy moral authority is a core principle. Today that was negated by the PML-N, which sought to place their corrupt leader above all laws,” he said in a series of tweet in response to disapproval of the bill presented by opposition lawmakers in the NA seeking to ban disqualified members from heading political parties.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) legislator Naveed Qamar presented the bill in the NA seeking amendment in Election Bill 2017 which allows disqualified members to head political parties, a provision opposition thinks has only been inserted to facilitate former PM Nawaz Sharif.

“Today all PML-N members of the NA should hang their heads in shame for making a farce out of our democracy. They opposed an amendment to the election law, simply to allow Nawaz Sharif to remain as head of the PML-N despite being disqualified from membership of the parliament under the constitution,” wrote Imran lashing out at the ruling party’s MNAs.

“What a terrible and demoralising message has gone out to the nation, especially the youth that there is nothing wrong with being corrupt,” Imran Khan added.

He said the PML-N MNAs also showed that their only purpose in the parliament was to protect the Sharif mafia’s corruption.

Senate and National Assembly last month passed Election Bill 2017 along with a controversial amendment paving way for former PM Nawaz Sharif to head the PML-N. The opposition bill was to remove the clause from the passed bill.
