Vijay, who tried to evade a bouncer from paceman Morne Morkel on the third day of the game, was given out caught behind by umpire Kumar Dharmasena.

A visibly disappointed Vijay gestured that he was hit on the arm guard before walking off the ground.

“Vijay was fined 30 per cent of his match fee by (match referee) Jeff Crowe,” the International Cricket Council said in a press release.

His actions amounted to breaching Article 2.1.5 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.

The charge was levelled by Kumar Dharmasena and Bruce Oxenford, the onfield umpires, and C.K. Nandan, the third umpire.

All level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee.
