KARACHI: Pakistan Maritime Security Agency on Sunday arrested twenty-three Indian fishermen for violating maritime boundaries and seized four ships in open sea.

According to a spokesman of the agency, the Indian fishermen were arrested for fishing illegally within Pakistan’s territorial water. They have been handed over to police for further legal proceedings.

Meanwhile, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) are also said to have arrested six Pakistani fishermen who had sailed from the coast of Thatta. The Indian authorities have also seized their boats. A Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum representative confirmed that the fishermen belonged to Thatta.

Yesterday, fifty-five Indian fisherman were sent to jail after being presented before a special duty magistrate at the Karachi Docks police station after they were arrested for trespassing Pakistan’s territorial waters.

This come over two weeks after Pakistan released as many as sixty-eight Indian fishermen held for trespassing into iterritorial waters after they were released from Malir Jail.

Afaq Rizvi, a senior official from the prison, told news agencies that over 380 Indian fishermen still remained behind bars in the country.

Indian and Pakistani fishermen are frequently detained for illegal fishing since the Arabian Sea border is not clearly defined and many boats lack the technology to fix their precise location.

Fishermen often languish in jail even after serving their terms, as poor diplomatic ties between the two neighbours mean fulfilling bureaucratic requirements can take a long time.

In July Pakistan released 78 Indian fishermen held for trespassing into its territorial waters.
