An Indian man chopped off his index finger in anger after mistakenly voting for the wrong party in the country’s national election.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the man named Pawan Kumar explained his reason behind the aw-strucking action, saying that he became confused by the symbols on the electronic voting machine and cast vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) instead of its regional rival in Uttar Pradesh state.

Distressed Kumar went back to his home and amputated his finger with a meat cleaver.

A second video of the man showed the butcher’s knife on the ground outside a toilet, with Kumar standing nearby holding up his hand with a bandage over the missing appendage.

“I wanted to vote for elephant but it went to flower,” he says in the video.

The lotus is the symbol of BJP while the Bahujan Samaj Party’s electoral identification is the elephant.

“I went home and chopped off my finger with the cleaver,” said Kumar. He said no pressure had been put on him over his vote.

Thursday was the second phase of India’s mammoth elections which kicked off on April 11 and runs through to May 19.
