WELLINGTON: According to the NZ Herald, a Twitter post containing a photo of a gun and captioned “You are next” was sent to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on social media .
Police in New Zealand said they are investigating death threats sent to the prime minister.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said Twitter “seems to have algorithms for everything else and they owe the public a duty of care”.
Twitter later suspended the account which contained anti-Islamic content and white supremacist hate speech.
The posts targeted Twitter itself after the social networking giant tweeted a message in solidarity with victims following the Christchurch mosque attacks last Friday which left 50 people dead.
The New Zealand prime minister has been hailed internationally for her leadership skills and the handling of the situation in the wake of the horrific attack.
In a telephonic conversation with his New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister Imran Khan also admired the humane handling of the situation after the massacre.
He appreciated the high level of respect shown by the Prime Minister of New Zealand for Muslims and maintained that Ardern has demonstrated the way to other leaders in the face of rising Islamophobia and global extremism.
