Renowned Hurriyat leader, human rights activist and lawyer Jalil Andrabi is being remembered on his 27th martyrdom anniversary.

Jalil Andrabi was martyred on March 27, 1996, in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K). The family of Andrabi still awaits justice despite the passage of 27 years.

Jalil Andrabi was arrested by the Indian army’s 35th Rashtriya Rifles Major Avtar Singh on March 8, 1996, and three weeks later, on March 27, 1996, his body was found floating in the Jhelum River near Padshahi Bagh in Srinagar.

After the matter was highlighted in the media, the Indian government rather than punishing Major Avtar Singh, helped him to flee US.

Jalil Andrabi was murdered for documenting human rights violations by Indian troops in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and until his death, he remained a vocal critic of the crimes committed by Indian troops in the territory.

Hurriyat leaders and organizations including Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori, Yasmeen Raja, Zamoorda Habib, Dr Musaib, Javeed Ahmed Mir and Bar member Adv GN Shaheen in their statements in Srinagar while eulogizing Jaleel Andrabi’s sacrifices for the Kashmir cause said his gruesome murder remains etched in Kashmiris’ memory and the people of Kashmir could never forget him.

The leaders reiterated to continue his mission till freedom of Jammu and Kashmir from tyrannical clutches of India.
