Jaun Elia’s 83rd birth anniversary today


Today is the 83rd  birth anniversary of famous Urdu poet, philosopher and scholar Jaun Elia.

Jaun Elia was born on December 14, 1931 in Amroha,Uttar Pradesh. During his youth, Pakistan gained independence and he migrated to Pakistan in 1957, and made Karachi his home.

He was known as the King of Sorrow and got acclaimed after the launch of his first poetry collection ‘Shayad’. His poetry was different in a sense that he gave a unique perspective to Urdu poetry and youth were especially attracted to Jaun’s poetry.
His other famous collections are Yaani, Guman, Lekin, Goya and Farnood.

He was also fluent Arabic, English, Persian, Sanskrit and Hebrew speaker.

His father, Shafiq Hasan Elia, was also an artist and associated with art and literature and also an astrologer and a poet. This aesthetic family trend exposed him to art innately and he wrote his first Urdu couplet when he was just 8.

The poet had also worked as an editor with Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Board in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan for a short time period and his famous publications include a book on 12th century Fatimid revolutionary Hassan Bin Sabbah, and also various texts about the Ismaili sect in Islam which are available in ITREB library. He also translated various Mautazalite pieces.

He died after a prolonged illness on 8 November 2002 in Karachi.
