Javed Hashmi

MakhdoomJaved Hashmi is veteran politician who has presided over the Pakistan Muslim League and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Hashmi was born on 17 July 1951 in Multan. He attended Punjab University where he was part of the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami . He received his BSc in Political Science in 1969, followed by MSc in 1971, and Master of Philosophy in 1973 from the same institution.

Hashmi joined the Pakistan Muslim League in 1985, developing close association with Nawaz Sharif. He served as the federal Minister of Health and as the Minister of Youth Affairs in both tenures of Nawaz Sharif.

After Nawaz Sharif was dismissed in a coup d’état by General Pervez Musharraf in 1999, Hashmi was appointed central president of the PML which saw a landslide defeat in the 2002 general elections.

In 2003, Hashmi was arrested and faced a trial on treason charges in the Central Jail Rawalpindi after making controversial statements against armed forces, and was released after five years in 2007.

In the 2008 elections, Hashmi won record three out of the four seats contested, and only lost out to Shah Mehmood Qureshi in his home city of Multan. Hashmi won National Assembly seats from Multan, Lahore and Rawalpindi beating Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad in the latter one.

On July 20, 2010 Hashmi suffered from brain haemorrhage and was paralyzed from his left arm. After recovering, he served as the Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and but resigned after falling out with Nawaz Sharif on various political issues.

On 24 December 2011, Hashmi joined the PTI and was elected the party’s first president.  In 2013 elections Hashmi won from both two constituencies from in Islamabad and Multan.

However, he fell out of  favour after publicly opposing the party’s decision to hold mass protests against Nawaz Sharif, after allegedly rigging in the 2013 general elections.

He subsequently resigned from both the party and parliament, and unsuccessfully contested to re-claim his home constituency as an independent candidate backed partially by the ruling PML-N.

Hashmi is known for his bold and fearless statements, often controversial which has garnered him the rebel image. He recently rekindled his association with the PML-N having met Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz but it need to be seen if Hashmi would be part of the next elections.
