Justice (retd) Wajihuddin Ahmed resigns from PTI

He has submitted his resignation to Chairman Imran Khan without specifying any reason, but stated that it was difficult for him to continue within the party any longer. It is unclear whether his resignation has been accepted by the party.

Ahmed served as the head of the election tribunal of the PTI and was even tasked to oversee a commission to oversee any irregularities in the intra-party elections which took place before the general elections in 2013.

This led to differences with several senior members of the party after he submitted a damning report that the party was run like a mafia and need to implement sweeping reforms and recommendations by the tribunal.

The basic membership of Ahmed was suspended by the party in 2015, after which he called for the ouster of senior PTI leaders including Jehangir Khan Tareen, Aleem Khan, and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervaiz Khattak.

Justice Wajih was a strong critic of former President Pervez Musharraf and had a leading role in the lawyer’s movement in 2007. He ran unsuccessfully against Musharraf for the presidential elections in 2008.

He joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on 10th January 2011, and took part in national politics. He was also the candidate in 2013 presidential election against Mamnoon Hussain.
