ISLAMABAD: Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Pakistan in an oath taking ceremony at Presidency here, ARY News reported on Thursday.  

President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to the new Chief Justice of Pakistan. 

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Leader of Opposition Syed Khursheed Shah, judges, federal ministers, members of the parliament and other dignitaries attended the oath taking ceremony. 

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani is said to be a mild mannered man and is expected to maintain the court’s focus on rights but steer clear of intervening in executive policies.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, during the full court reference held in the honour of Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, raised question mark over the policy of suo motu notices and highlighted the need to determine the limits and contours of the judiciary’s jurisdiction with regard to the matter. 

The change in the Supreme Court is the last handover in a year of orderly transitions for Pakistan. General election in May this year marked the first time one democratic government handed power to another. The army chief steps down this month.

A lover of poetry, antiques and films, Justice Jillani is related to the new ambassador to the United States Jalil Abbas Jilani and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani who Chaudhry forced to step down last year.

Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani recently resigned from his position as Acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to assume the top judicial post of the country.
