Sindh governor sets aside punishment awarded to K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi in harassment case

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori on Tuesday overturned the punishment awarded to K-Electric Chief Executive Officer Moonis Alvi in a workplace harassment case, providing major relief to the power utility’s top executive.

In a notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), K-Electric said the governor had set aside the impugned order passed by the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh against Moonis Alvi.

According to the company, the decision was issued by the governor in exercise of powers under Section 9 of the Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010, after hearing arguments from the concerned parties and reviewing the relevant record.

“The Governor of Sindh has set aside the impugned order passed by the Provincial Ombudsman Sindh,” the company said in its statement.

Reacting to the development, Moonis Alvi said in a post on X: “Alhamdulillah, good to see this chapter coming to a rightful close. Grateful to all my family and friends who stood by me during this time.”

On July 31, 2025, the Provincial Ombudsman of Sindh, Justice (R) Shah Nawaz Tariq, had ordered the removal of K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi from his position and imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 million after harassment allegations against him were proven.

Subsequently, the Sindh High Court (SHC), the Sindh High Court (SHC), hearing a constitutional petition filed by Alvi, suspended the operation of the Ombudsman’s order. Alvi had also filed a representation (appeal) before the office of the Sindh governor, the designated forum for challenging orders passed by the Provincial Ombudsman.

The complaint was filed by Mehreen Zehra, a former Chief Marketing Officer at K-Electric, who alleged that Moonis Alvi had subjected her to harassment and mental distress. K-Electric had engaged her in 2019 for consultancy services.

Following the investigation, the Ombudsman concluded that the allegations were substantiated and directed that K-Electric CEO Moonis Alvi be removed from office. He was also ordered to pay the penalty amount within one month. The Ombudsman warned that failure to pay the fine would result in the seizure of both movable and immovable assets belonging to Moonis Alvi.

The Ombudsman had further directed that Alvi’s national identity card and passport could be blocked in case of non-compliance.
