Karachi: Fire at high-rise building still raging after several hours

KARACHI: Fire broke out at a high-rise building on Ibrahim Ismail Chundrigar Road, better known as city’s I.I. Chundrigar Road, here at early hours of Saturday morning raging after hours of fire-fighting, ARY News reported.

The fire brigade facing hurdles to douse fierce fire on II Chundrigar Road which has reportedly moved up to 18th floor by engulfing two more floors.

At least eight fire tenders are engaged in extinguishing the fire including a fire snorkel. The fire snorkel could only reach up to the 14th floor causing hurdle for firefighters in dousing the raging blaze. The fire could not be controlled after nine hours.

According to rescue agencies, the fire erupted on 15th floor of Saima Tower on I.I. Chundrigar road later spread to 16th floor of the building. No loss of life has been reported as the building was evacuated to avoid causalities.

The eye witnesses said that fire erupted around 5:00 am in the morning and the rescue operations were promptly started after the blaze. The cause of the blaze could not be ascertained.

Mayor visits 

City mayor, Waseem Akhtar during his visit of the spot of fire talking to media claimed that the city’s fire department is not getting any technical support or funds either from the province or federal government.

He also lamented over not getting any response over his letter to the federal government in a bid to draw their attention towards the issues being faced by the city’s fire brigade department.
