Karachi Landhi fire intensifies, third factory evacuated as flames advance

KARACHI: A fire that broke out at a plastic factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone has escalated, with officials confirming that two factories are now affected by a third-degree blaze as firefighting efforts continue, ARY News reported.

According to reports, the fire initially erupted in a plastic factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone and engulfed a large portion of the first floor before spreading to a neighbouring warehouse storing shoes, Deputy Commissioner Malir Sameeullah Sheikh said.

Authorities reported that the flames are now moving toward a third factory in the Landhi Export Processing Zone, which teams are trying to protect. All factories in the affected area were evacuated as a precaution, he added.

Earlier, officials had declared the incident a third-degree fire after it spread across parts of the Landhi Export Processing Zone, making containment difficult. People inside nearby facilities were moved out, while water spraying operations were launched to stop further spread.

According to fire authorities, more than 10 fire tenders, along with snorkels, are engaged in the operation. Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan said teams are working to prevent the blaze from expanding further within the Landhi Export Processing Zone.

The Karachi Fire Brigade continues operations with additional support from water bowsers, though some vehicles faced delays due to traffic congestion.

Authorities are clearing routes to ensure emergency access. Sindh’s Inspector General of Police directed SSP Malir and SP Traffic to reach the scene and secure the surrounding areas.

Sindh Rangers personnel arrived shortly after the incident and joined rescue operations, assisting firefighting teams and deploying additional manpower to maintain traffic flow and secure the perimeter. A Rangers spokesperson said saving lives and containing the fire remain top priorities.

Emergency measures were also enforced at hydrants in Landhi and Sherpao, with the Karachi Water Corporation ensuring an uninterrupted water supply. Additional water tankers have been deployed to support firefighting efforts.

No casualties have been reported so far, and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.

Sindh Chief Minister has taken notice of the incident, sought a report from the Commissioner Karachi, and issued emergency directives to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and fire services. Authorities have also been instructed to conduct a full inquiry and ensure assistance for affected workers and their families.
