Senior KU professor shot dead in Karachi

Police confirmed that Dr Hafiz Muhammad Shakeel Auj, dean of Islamic Studies Department of KU, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. They said initial reports suggested that incident occurred during a mugging bid.

Dr Shakeel had sustained bullet injuries when unidentified armed men opened fire on him near Baitul Mukarram Mosque in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

According to reports, he was driving a car when gunmen targeted him.

The victim was immediately moved to a nearby hospital. It may be noted here that Dr Shakeel was conferred with Sitara-e-Imtiaz on March 23 this year.

Wave of mourning spread across the university after news of Dr. Shakeel’s killing came to light. All exams scheduled for today at KU has been suspended. New dates for the papers would be announced later.

Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ebad has ordered IG Sindh to submit him a report of the incident and take responsible elements to task.

Vice chancellor of the KU said the varsity had been deprived of its competent teacher and an intellectual. He condemned the incident and demanded arrest of the killers of Dr. Shakeel.
