ISLAMABAD: The wife of Kashmiri leader and Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Yasin Malik has said that people of Kashmir are the flag-bearers of non-violent movements.

Mashaal Malik, while addressing a protest outside the National Press Club, has demanded that the international day of non-violence named after Mahatma Gandhi should be dedicated to the people of Kashmir.

Gandhi, who is widely recognised as an advocate of peace and non-violence, was assassinated by an Hindu extremist in 1948. His birthday, 2nd October, has been declared the ‘International Day of Nonviolence’ by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007.

A large number of people attended the protest, carrying placards and raising slogans for the freedom of Kashmir, and against the atrocities in Indian-Occupied Kashmir.

Malik said that India has no right or moral authority to celebrate the day of non-violence. She said that ever since the Second World War, the highest amount of violence was inflicted upon the people of Kashmir by India.

She has the people of Kashmir were leading a non-violent struggle for freedom and their right of self-determination. Therefore, it is the people of Kashmir who deserve to celebrate the day of non-violence than anyone else.

She called on the United Nations to take notice of the violence in Kashmir, and act on their right to self-determination based on on the resolutions on the United Nations General Assembly.
