Kasur returns to normalcy after days of chaos over Zainab's killing

KASUR: After two consecutive days of chaos paralyzing Kasur following the rape and murder of 7-year-old Zainab, normalcy began to return to the city on Friday with a feeling of grief still hanging heavy in the air.

The paramilitary troopers were deployed in the city on Thursday after enraged protesters attacked the offices of the ruling party’s lawmakers over failure of police to make headway in the probe into the rape and murder of the 7-year-old girl.

On Friday morning, business centers and educational institutions opened as per routine and vehicles were seen plying on the city roads.

The protests turned violent on Wednesday when police personnel opened fire on hundreds of protesters, outside DC Office, killing two people.

The protest erupted when the minor, who was kidnapped, was found raped, dead and buried in garbage.

The girl’s rape and murder sparked widespread outrage as the people from all social strata deplored the incident as horrific, demanding #JusticeForZainab.

A day earlier, Zainab’s father Ameen Ansari demanded that the head of the JIT constituted to probe the killing of his daughter should be removed, saying he didn’t trust him.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while chairing a meeting, announced a Rs 10 million reward for those who would help identify the killer of Zainab.

He also announced Rs 3 million each as compensation for the legal heirs of the two protesters killed in police firing.
