Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lifts ban on crane hunting

PESHAWAR: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday lifted ban on hunting of crane bird across the province, ARY News reported.

Wildlife Department, KP, said hunters would be allowed to hunt only 10 pairs of crane during the hunting season.

The department said one crane could be hunted at the cost of Rs300, while a camp for hunting could be established for Rs5, 000.

It said the hunters would have to fulfill all the legal formalities including getting shooting license for hunting. The Wildlife Department said legal action would be taken on hunting without shooting license.

In December 2016, the Lahore High Court had ordered the government of Punjab to produce the summary of the cabinet’s decision about issuing permits for hunting the endangered bird Houbara Bustard in the province.

The court while hearing a petition challenging issuence of the hunting permits had also issued a notice to houbara bustard protection foundation.

Director General Wildlife Punjab had informed the bench headed by Chief Justice Mansoor Ali Shah that after sufficient increase in the growth of the endangered bird, a permit had been issued for hunting 100 birds within 10 days.
