KARACHI: At least three labourers suffocated to death on Monday after falling into a pit inside a local factory in Ibrahim Hyderi neighbourhood situated in Karachi’s Korangi area, ARY News reported.
A sorrowful incident occurred in a chicken feed manufacturing factory where three labourers lost their lives, whereas, another one was shifted to Jinnah Hospital in critical condition.
The deceased employees were identified as Iqbaluddin, Darwaish and Zarabali.
According to police, a labourer was ‘accidentally’ slipped into the pit while other colleagues subsequently jumped as well to save him. However, one of the workers was safely pulled back, police added.
Police said that the company was a manufacturer of chicken feed from fishes where the incident took place. They said that the deaths were caused due to suffocation.
Owner of the factory was arrested, who, in his statement, told police that nobody was allowed to come closer to the pit.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Malir said that the company has been sealed till completion of an investigation into the incident. He said that the labourers ‘jumped’ into the factory’s pit to save one another.
Factory related accidents are common in Pakistan due to lack of security and rescue arrangements, which has claimed hundreds of lives so far due to the negligence of the government for lacking to implement safety policies.
